1. Overview

MathWiz ("we", "us", "our") is an AI-powered mathematics learning platform for Australian students from Kindergarten to Year 12, operated by MathWiz (ABN to be registered). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect information when you use mathwiz.academy.

We are committed to complying with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). We also take steps consistent with the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) given our platform is designed for children.

2. What Data We Collect

Account Registration

• First name and last initial
• Email address (parent or student)
• Year level
• Password (stored as a secure hash — never in plain text)
• Google account ID (if signing up via Google)

Usage Data

• Activities completed and scores
• Time spent on the platform
• Questions answered and accuracy rates
• Current level and progress per topic
• Stars, XP, and badge achievements

Feedback (Optional)

• Star rating and written comments submitted via the in-app feedback system
• These are stored in a private Google Sheet accessible only to MathWiz administrators

Technical Data

• Browser type and version
• Device type (desktop, tablet, phone)
• Country/region (not precise location)
• Pages visited and session duration

We do not collect full names, home addresses, phone numbers, photos, or any payment information directly (payments are processed by Stripe).

3. Children's Privacy

MathWiz is designed for use by children. We take special care to protect the privacy of users under 18.

• We collect only a first name and last initial — not a full name
• We do not display advertising of any kind to students
• We do not share student data with third parties for marketing purposes
• We do not allow students to communicate with other users
• Progress data is tied to the account and not publicly visible

For students under 13, we recommend that a parent or guardian creates and manages the account. By creating an account for a child, you confirm you are their parent or legal guardian.

4. How We Use Your Data

• To provide the service — saving progress, tracking achievements, personalising difficulty
• To improve the platform — understanding which activities students find most challenging
• To send transactional emails — account confirmation, trial expiry reminders, subscription receipts, payment failure notices, password resets, and important changes that affect your account or this policy. These are required to operate your account and cannot be turned off while your account is active.
• To send marketing emails (opt-in only) — newsletters, product updates, educational content, and promotional offers, sent only if you tick the marketing opt-in box at signup or in account settings. You can unsubscribe at any time via the link in any marketing email or by emailing hello@mathwiz.academy. Unsubscribing from marketing does not affect transactional emails.
• To ensure safety — detecting and preventing abuse or unauthorised access
• To process payments — subscription billing via Stripe (we never store card details)

We comply with the Australian Spam Act 2003: every marketing email we send identifies us as the sender, includes a working unsubscribe link, and is sent only to recipients who have given express consent.

We do not use your data to show you ads, sell to third parties, or build advertising profiles.

5. Data Sharing

We share data only with the following trusted service providers, and only to the extent necessary to operate MathWiz:

• Google Firebase — authentication, database, and hosting (Google Cloud infrastructure, Australia/US regions)
• Stripe — payment processing (Stripe never shares financial data with us beyond transaction confirmation)
• Google Workspace — admin email and internal feedback storage
• Anthropic Claude API — powers the Wiz AI tutor (question context is sent, no personal data is stored by Anthropic)
• Resend — transactional and (with consent) marketing email delivery. Resend processes your email address solely to deliver our messages and provide delivery analytics, and does not use it for its own marketing.

We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information with any third party. We will disclose data if required by Australian law or a valid court order.

6. Data Security

• All data is transmitted over HTTPS/TLS encryption
• Passwords are hashed using Firebase Authentication — never stored in plain text
• Database access requires authenticated Firebase credentials
• We conduct regular reviews of our security practices

While we implement industry-standard security measures, no online service can guarantee absolute security. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately at admin@mathwiz.academy.

7. Your Rights

Under the Australian Privacy Act, you have the right to:

• Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
• Correct — request correction of inaccurate data
• Delete — request deletion of your account and associated data
• Portability — request an export of your data in a readable format
• Withdraw marketing consent — click unsubscribe on any marketing email, update your preferences in account settings, or email us to opt out
• Withdraw consent — cancel your subscription and request data removal at any time

8. Cookies

MathWiz uses minimal cookies necessary to operate the service:

• Authentication cookies — keep you logged in (session-based)
• Preference cookies — remember your settings

We do not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party analytics cookies. You can clear cookies at any time through your browser settings, though this will log you out of the platform.

9. Terms of Service

9.1 Acceptance

By creating an account or using MathWiz, you agree to these Terms of Service. If you are creating an account for a child, you accept these terms on their behalf.

9.2 Eligibility

MathWiz is intended for students from Kindergarten to Year 12 and their parents, guardians, and teachers. Users under 13 must have parental consent.

9.3 Account Responsibility

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials. Please notify us immediately of any unauthorised access at admin@mathwiz.academy.

9.4 Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

• Attempt to reverse engineer, copy, or reproduce the platform
• Share account credentials with others
• Use the platform for any purpose other than educational practice
• Attempt to circumvent adaptive difficulty or gamification systems
• Upload or transmit harmful, offensive, or inappropriate content

9.5 Subscriptions and Payments

MathWiz offers free and paid subscription tiers. Paid subscriptions are billed monthly or annually via Stripe. You may cancel at any time — cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. We do not offer refunds for partial billing periods.

9.6 Intellectual Property

All content on MathWiz — including question generators, AI tutor interactions, visual design, and the Wiz character — is the intellectual property of MathWiz. You may not reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works without written permission.

9.7 Disclaimers

MathWiz is an educational supplement and is not a substitute for classroom instruction. While we align with the Australian Curriculum, we make no guarantee that use of the platform will result in specific academic outcomes.

9.8 Limitation of Liability

To the extent permitted by Australian law, MathWiz is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from use of the platform.

9.9 Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of Queensland, Australia. Any disputes will be resolved in the courts of Queensland.

9.10 Changes to Terms

We may update these terms from time to time. We will notify registered users of material changes via email. Continued use after notification constitutes acceptance.
